Trans Mentor Project Frequently Asked Questions

What is Trans Mentor Project?

Trans Mentor Project (TMP) is an innovative national e-mentoring program that pairs trans and nonbinary (TGNB) teens and young adults, ages 13-24, with supportive, identity-affirming TNGB mentors, ages 23+, who will empower them to meet their personal goals and thrive.

What is Trans Mentor Project’s approach to mentoring?

TMP embraces a mentee-centric model that empowers our mentees to positively impact their own lives, the lives of others, and their communities. The mentoring relationship is centered around building the confidence and skills critical for self-agency and leadership. Empowerment includes helping mentees to define, acknowledge and respect who they are.

Do mentees or mentors have to pay to participate?

TMP is free to all participants.

Are mentors paid or volunteer?

Mentorship is volunteer-based.

Why online?

Trans Mentor Project is often the first opportunity for TGNB youth and young adults to meet and develop meaningful connections with others in the community. By bringing together youth and young adults nationwide, TMP mentees and mentors learn from one another’s diverse experiences.

Our online platform allows youth who may lack access to in-person services for any reason (transportation, disability, chronic illness, lack of local services) the ability to participate in a mentoring relationship and peer community.

Is it safe to participate?

TMP provides a safe, monitored online experience by pairing mentees with mentors who are screened, pass background checks, participate in mandatory training, receive ongoing supervision, and can point their match to trustworthy resources.

How are mentee/mentor pairs matched?

As a mentee-centric program, mentees and mentors are matched based on criteria that mentees indicate as important to them. We will do our best to provide mentees with a match based on their desired qualities.

What if the match isn’t working?

The program director schedules regular check-ins with all participants. In the rare instance that a match isn’t working, the program director facilitates finding each person a new mentor or mentee.

What is the time commitment?

Mentoring pairs usually meet once a week for approximately 45 minutes. They agree to participate in TMP for at least one year. Mentors also participate in ongoing monthly supervision and training. Mentees and mentors set meeting times that work best for them.

What is the mentor’s role?

Mentors are supportive adults who understand and can relate to the experiences of their mentees. They are affirming, non-judgmental, and good listeners.

What kind of training will mentors receive?

Mentors receive initial training to prepare them for their mentoring roles. Topics include promoting positive youth development, building mentoring relationships, and empowering mentees to shape their unique experiences with their mentors. Mentors also participate in ongoing training and supervision throughout the course of the program.

Will mentors be expected to handle emergencies or mental health crises?

Mentors do not act as mental health professionals. If an emergency or mental health crisis should arise, program staff will guide and assist mentors in responding appropriately.

Will I be able to talk to my mentee/mentor outside of the platform?

For the safety and privacy of all participants, communication takes place through our secure platform. The sharing of phone numbers, emails, and/or social media accounts is prohibited.

Why do we need caregiver consent?

For mentees under the age of 18, we are obligated to obtain consent from at least one caregiver. We are sorry this requirement prevents some teens from participating in TMP. Please continually check our website for other events and programs that do not require consent.

Can I apply if I live outside of the US?

The Sam & Devorah Foundation is based in the United States. At this time, we are focused on serving youth in the United States.

I know someone who would be interested in being a mentee/mentor, what should I do?

That’s great! Please direct them to our website or email us.
